The Advantages of Being in Business During a Crisis

Tuesday May 19, 2009

Despite the fact that things are just now recovering, the world money crisis has still managed to change the way we think. No more are the wizards of financial engineering hailed as the best businesspeople our society’s best and brightest can aspire to, and the basic thinking behind the economic status quo is being heavily questioned.

Along with that comes another demand: has the basic idea of business degrees become irrelevant? I’m here to say that the answer is a very sure no. In fact, the very opposite has happened.

Yep, an MBA Isn’t for Everyone

The worlds of the MBA and financial engineering haven’t suddenly disappeared, but they have certainly been diminished by the world financial mess. Not anymore are they the only options for young graduates. People are starting to thinking about old-fashioned online business degrees all over.

In the past, if you wanted to earn a lucrative living for yourself, you didn’t simply go into ‘business’. You went into investments. You became a day trader. You worked with percentages of percentages that had no relation to the actual market, because they’d been "derived" so many times that it took 20 PhDs to understand them.

Let’s Go Back to Basics, Shall We?

But for now, is that the ideal way, still the street that the young, smart graduate wants to take? Not really. In fact, we’re going to note a big uptick in business degree courses–small-to-medium sized business, for example. So this is the best period to do it.

The best and the brightest, the very people who would historically–if investment banking hadn’t warped everything–go on to commence successful startups after their education, they’ve all just ended varying Wall-Street-geared university programs that are going to have to be re-fitted in a banking system that has no more room for them.

Why A Recession Means It’s The Best Time to Be In Business

Fundamentally, there has never been a more opportunity-filled time to be getting a business degree. There have been easier times, of course, but if you take a look at the post-1920s depression, many of the most solid, durable firms came out of the uncertain fears of that moment.

So: if you’ve been considering a business degree, don’t put it off until everyone is full of energy and the world of business is newly filled with energetic businesspeople. Job cuts have been at record highs for months. Absolute swaths of people, educated people, have no jobs. You can have access to a better workforce than ever before.

The Workforce Has Never Been So Plentiful: Take Advantage of It

When the economic recovery comes, it’s going to depend primarily on the ingenuity of real business owners doing actual business, not just crunching numbers designed to rake in ridiculous amounts of cash.

And there you go: you’re already looking up the possibilities of a business degree. Keep going. There’s never been a nicer opportunity. The market isn’t going to be low forever, and when it soon jumps back up, you want to be in the ideal place to get the most of the benefits of your hard work. Find a degree, start working, and make your living!
