With education costs continuing to increase from year to year it is becoming harder to find the money necessary for a college education and many students spend more time worrying about raising the money needed than they do working at their studies. If this was not bad enough far too many students find that once they have left college they are left with so much debt that it simply drags them down and will probably take years to repay. Now, if this paints a grim picture then for a lot of students the problem of funding an education is compounded by the requirement to raise the funds needed without having a cosigner for their loans.

College funding these days is not simply a matter of looking to a single source of finance for most students but is a matter of building a portfolio of funds from a variety of different sources.

The first action for every student must be to look for scholarships for college and grants. Most students overlook this source of effectively free money completely and yet it is surprising just how many scholarships and grants are available these days. In many cases of course the amounts of money in question are relatively small but even so can be extremely useful as a part of your total funding plan.

The next source of funding should be federal loans through schemes such as Perkins loans and Stafford loans which are offered as both unsubsidized and subsidized loans. Perkins loans are especially attractive because of their low interest rate but are also the most difficult loans to get and need a student to show financial need.

Sadly at this point despite the fact that you will have started to create your portfolio it is unlikely that it will give you sufficient funds and you will have to begin casting your net wider and here you will have two roads to follow.

If you are fortunate enough to have the assistance and support of either a parent or guardian then they could apply for a federal student PLUS loan to make up the difference between the funding which you have been able to obtain yourself and the actual cost of attending college. Student PLUS loans are subject to your guardian or parent having a fairly good credit history but the requirements are not as strict as those which would be applied by private lenders.

If you do not have a parent or guardian you can turn to or decide to go it alone then you will need to secure a loan from a private lender and precisely how easy that will be will depend to a large degree on your personal credit history. In most cases private lenders will be happy to grant you a loan if you have a good credit rating and will require you to have a cosigner if you have no credit history on which they can base their lending decision or have a poor credit rating. However, with more and more people with a poor or bad credit rating these days there is also a growing number of private lenders who are prepared to grant loans without the requirement for a cosigner and so it is simply a case of shopping around.

Bad credit college loans without a requirement for a cosigner will of course be more expensive than a standard good credit loan although if you take your time and shop around with care you will obtain a loan at a reasonable rather than extortionate rate of interest.
