As a former French teacher and foreign language instructor, I have to say that this book is just excellent. Each lesson builds well upon the previous lessons, the language notes are clear and the cultural notes are always on-point and fit well with the vocabulary being introduced. Nothing in this book is gratuitous. The audio CD's are good as well, although I wish some listening comprehension exercises had been included along with the pronunciation of the vocabulary being introduced.

I think that for me, beginning with pinyin (the romanized version of Chinese), and focusing on the oral language, is a great way to begin. After the first few chapters the kanji (Chinese ideographs) are just there, next to the pinyin, and the learner soon begins to recognize certain characters, without even trying. But it is helpful, I think, to have a grasp of the vocabulary and structures of Chinese before beginning to really work on the kanji.

Outside of California there are no colleges that offer juris doctor programs online. However, if you are interested in getting a bachelors degree in legal studies that will put you in the right direction that is a great idea that can be accomplished online.
This site has some information on regionally accredited degree programs in legal studies and some colleges for you to consider:

Good Luck!
References :
The only state you can get a law degree online is in California, and frankly, the passing rate is low and I wouldn't hire you as an attorney if you DID go about it that way.

Law is a complex profession which requires seven years' education because of its complexity. If you don't have the time to focus on the level of classes you need to complete to earn your J.D. it's entirely possibly that in the long run, you wouldn't be willing to spend that time working on your client's case either.

Lawyers abide by a code of ethics and one of those ethics is that you are required to serve as competent representation. I just don't think an "online degree" makes you competent enough to represent a client in court.

Please try applying for FAFSA financial aid for graduate school and look at some state level colleges. (Try University of Michigan Law). That way you have financial assistance to pay for it and you have spent the time needed to represent and serve your client . . .and the court.
References :
Yes you can. English Lit. is one of the subjects that's ideally suited for online/distance study. You spend most of your time reading literature and writing about it - you don't need a classroom for that.

The best distance learning (arguably) is at Oxford and Harvard. Neither offers the full MA online.

Some people won't respect it, as Prof Ranto says. But then, some people don't respect a degree from anywhere less than Harvard, Yale, Oxford, et al and we 'mere mortals' don't care so much what they think. Most people haven't graduated from one of the elite colleges.

Take a look at UMass http://www.umassonline.net/degrees/MALinguistics.html for an MA in Applied Linguistics.

Western New Mexico University http://www.wnmu.edu/VirtualCampus/InterdisciplinaryMasters.htm Has an MA that can include English as the major field.

Also look at Northern New Mexico, Texas Tech, and East Carolina University (http://core.ecu.edu/engl/tpc/tekkom/tpc.htm )

CSU-Dominguez Hills has an MA in Humanities online http://www.csudh.edu/HUX/ that can concentrate in English.

Oxford teaches English Lit. online. http://onlinecourses.conted.ox.ac.uk/subjects/english.php not a master's program but Oxford is pretty well respected by most people around the world.

Harvard teaches English Lit online too. http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2008-09/DistanceEd/offer/ also not a degree (unless you want to visit Boston for a couple courses because these will count in their Master of Liberal Arts degree). Not too many people have a problem with Harvard University - even the extension college.

UC-Berkeley does a certificate program in writing online as does UCLA. http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/online/# http://www2.uclaextension.edu/writers/ Most people respect these too.

The bottom line is that people who think online/distance education is not reasonably respected are stuck in 1981. The key is to pick a school that is well respected. It's all about the reputation of the school and not whether it was online or classroom.
References :
my undergrad was in business. at one point i was drooling to get a JD/MBA. but my feelings were hurt when my school would not admit me into the MBA program b/c at the time they required work experience (i went to law school straight out of college). but now, i could give a flying fig! back then, i thought i wanted to concentrate on corporate law...then i discovered how much of a bore it was (to me).

i do want to go back to school one day, but now i want my PhD in Public Administration (i'm a government lawyer). i am not sure about you, but i am VERY CONFIDENT that i will not be practicing law for more than 7-10 years. but at this point, a MBA will not be doing much for me. it's really a marketability tool. so if you do not care about that, i would not worry about it.

but i will note...this all may be easier for me to say b/c i already have a business degree, and focused my undergrad on business (interships and the like). so if you feel you "may" need some credibility in business training, then go ahead. one year is nothing in the long run. and what's the rush to work? PUH-LEASE. i'm looking for somebody to pay for my PhD so i can go BACK to school :)
