I want to study English or Linguistics. Which school has the best distance learning for these subjects?

Yes you can. English Lit. is one of the subjects that's ideally suited for online/distance study. You spend most of your time reading literature and writing about it – you don't need a classroom for that.

The best distance learning (arguably) is at Oxford and Harvard. Neither offers the full MA online.

Some people won't respect it, as Prof Ranto says. But then, some people don't respect a degree from anywhere less than Harvard, Yale, Oxford, et al and we 'mere mortals' don't care so much what they think. Most people haven't graduated from one of the elite colleges.

Take a look at UMass http://www.umassonline.net/degrees/MALinguistics.html for an MA in Applied Linguistics.

Western New Mexico University http://www.wnmu.edu/VirtualCampus/InterdisciplinaryMasters.htm Has an MA that can include English as the major field.

Also look at Northern New Mexico, Texas Tech, and East Carolina University (http://core.ecu.edu/engl/tpc/tekkom/tpc.htm )

CSU-Dominguez Hills has an MA in Humanities online http://www.csudh.edu/HUX/ that can concentrate in English.

Oxford teaches English Lit. online. http://onlinecourses.conted.ox.ac.uk/subjects/english.php not a master's program but Oxford is pretty well respected by most people around the world.

Harvard teaches English Lit online too. http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2008-09/DistanceEd/offer/ also not a degree (unless you want to visit Boston for a couple courses because these will count in their Master of Liberal Arts degree). Not too many people have a problem with Harvard University – even the extension college.

UC-Berkeley does a certificate program in writing online as does UCLA. http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/online/# http://www2.uclaextension.edu/writers/ Most people respect these too.

The bottom line is that people who think online/distance education is not reasonably respected are stuck in 1981. The key is to pick a school that is well respected. It's all about the reputation of the school and not whether it was online or classroom.

If the degree comes from a school carrying a legitimate accreditation, it is generally not an issue. The masters degree is an entry ticket to certain types of jobs, but the attributes and qualities that you bring to the table as a candidate will really make the difference as to whether you are the person for the job. However, don't be surprised if you are asked why you selected to go the online route and what was the advantage in doing so.

There are tons of online programs. I personally attended traditional and online-only schools, and I have taught for various online schools and traditional schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Schools tend to vary in price, so we could say online schools are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

There are many online degree programs offered on the internet. How can I check if the online degree is accepted by the job market. A school teacher with a master's degree in education had to pay back her salary increase because the degree wasn't accepted by the Dept of Ed.

Yes there are many but are they from accredited institutions? Need to be very careful about that since only those from such an institution will be nationally recognized. If it's accredited I'd go for it. Check this website for the list of online degrees that are nationally accepted

Depends on the country, university and subject. Master's degrees in the UK are normally 1 year long (2 years part time) and many offer distance learning/online courses. The online courses are normally cheaper than full time attendance as you are not accessing lectures or needing any services. Give more information on the type of master's you are looking at and what country so others can give a more informed answer.

I am thinking about getting my masters degree and want to make sure that I don't end up wasting my time and money. I don't live close to a college and would prefer to take classes online due to my current schedule. Does anyone know how I can make sure that the program comes from an accredited and well ranked college? (a website) I already have a BS in Criminal Justice and plan to get my masters in that field. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you get your degree online from someplace like UMass or Florida State or the like then it will be perfectly acceptable to almost all employers and preferable to a degree in the classroom from some schools.

In fact, the diploma doesn't say "online" at all and the only way the employer would know is if you tell them or if you attend one of those schools that everyone knows is online.

Reality is that almost every college in the US is now teaching online and very many offer their degrees wholly online. Some people who are stuck in 1982 haven't figured that out yet and will tell you "online = bad" but you can look around yourself – Harvard, Stanford, UC-Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, and Oxford (among many others) are teaching online so they must think it viable.

To verify "well ranked" – check the US News and World Reports rankings – the best online programs are at the best traditional colleges.

Check your choices against the accreditors web site list. Be careful not to fall for "we're accredited" claims if schools that accredited themselves.
