What behind the scenes jobs are there in the Music business?

Tuesday Jan 13, 2009

I dont sing, but I love Music , mainly chart music , but all kinds really. What types of jobs are there in the music business for people that dont sing, and Is there any schools or online colleges I can study for if there is not a school near me (I'm in Western Canada)
I think I would have problems lifting heavy thngs due to an accident injury , Is there any other place I can explore in the industry besides stage hand , and is it harder to get in , if you are older or female ?

Well I spent over 20 years in the music business and I started out as a stage hand pulling cables. In the music business there are lots of jobs, depending on which branch of the music business you're interested in.

Here's a short list: stage tech, sound tech, light tech, guitar tech, drum tech, piano tech, rigger, ground rigger, loaders, sound engineer, light engineer, security, promotions, producing, sound design, light design, stage design, manager, road manager, tour manager, tour coordinator, bus driver, truck driver, catering, entertainment law, lots of assistant positions, record producer, mixer, cutter, merchandiser…and so on.

To be able to get the good high paying jobs or yellow card shows, you'd have to join a union which is called I.A.T.S.E. (Long name – International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts). Great Union. Also by joining this union you'd be able to also work in the Motion Picture Industry. There are Locals in almost every major city in Western Canada, I was with the Local in Saskatoon and a guest worker at the Local in Vancouver (Hollywood North).

i want to pursue a career in the music industry where should i go to college?

Sunday Jan 11, 2009

to pursue a music industry career should i move to NYC or stay in Los angeles or go elsewhere? where would i get better internships, job opportunities, and better music business education (college) ?
thanks for your help :)

Hi, I would strongly suggest the music business program at NYU. I have several friends in it, and a lot of them have great internships with record companies around the city or have had good exposure/experiences with recording, artists, etc. The program even has its own music label and is partnered with CMJ (a huge, 5-day city-wide music festival that happens in countless venues).

Another good music business school is Full Sail, which is in Florida. One of the advantages of Full Sail is that the program is accelerated (however, this means that students are basically always in class/lab).

I would say that despite which school you choose, living somewhere like LA or NYC definitely has benefits in the industry you are pursuing.

What can i do in highschool to get me ready for a career in the music business?

Friday Jan 9, 2009

so i really want to get into the recording business when i get out of college, but i really have no idea where to begin, and i know this is one of those things that i could start preparing for now…so how can i do that? i live in a big city so there might be some local labels, im not sure though. i would really like to go into something like band management or tour management

Record labels have internships for college students this is the best place to start. Music Analyst Jamille Luney (former producer for Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Nas, Rakim, etc..) lists the three most popular one's on her website http://jamilleluney.wordpress.com/trackmasterzcom/got-interships/ You can also search for more yourself by visiting record labels websites and doing a search for "internship" or "college internship" on their web page.

Can I major in music in college and then go to business school and get an MBA?

Monday Jan 5, 2009

Or do I have to go to undergraduate school for business too?

Most MBA students have an undergraduate degree in something other than business. That is why they get the MBA.

There were a couple of fine arts majors in my class at Duke — when I got my MBA. One of my current students has a BFA and MFA in film from NYU.

Which college has the best music business program in the nation?

Saturday Jan 3, 2009

I'm going to go out on a limb and say either UCLA or USC (and I don't even know if they offer a "music business program"). Fact is that it is who you know and not what you know that determines whether or not you succeed in the music industry.

If you are serious about it, I would get out to L.A. (which is why I said those schools since they are they most reputable in the area), start working on a degree in something (like business in general) and then work your butt off trying to get an internship somewhere. If somebody is nice enough to let you work for free and you can learn something from them, you can parlay this experience into what you really want.
