the open university is a British run on line university and the university of Phoenix is an American one. via both of these universities you can get accredited degrees in several courses.

I am in my junior year of college, have been going part time for years. Now I have moved to another state – out of state tuition and transfer of credits is no fun, and there's a baby on the way! Online ed sounds good but I don't know whether to trust it – will I be able to get a job with the resulting degree?

Most "online" schools don't have good reps. Consider your options carefully.

There are reputable, "brick and mortar" schools that offer degrees online. Their good reputation for their on-campus programs will flow over into their online program.

To be quite blunt, an online OR an offline degree from U Phoenix, or Devry or schools of that like will only get you so far, because the reputations of these schools isn't the greatest with employers.

Yes, they are accredited. Yes, some graduates have had great success. But no, I do not hire or recruit from these schools.

A degree of any sort from UMass Amherst, or U Nebraska Lincoln, or U Maryland, will likely be seen as more acceptable by more employers, and may, therefore, get you further.

Some great universities that offer online degrees include:

U Nebraska – Lincoln

Worcester Polytechnic Institute

And there are others. But in general, when you're looking for a distance learning degree, try to find a program at a school that has a good reputation for their "brick and mortar" campus. Start with your own (new) state's college system, and go from there.

Someone else mentioned online PhD programs. Be especially cautious there. A PhD is an important degree, and where you go really matters if you're going to be able to use it to get a job afterwards. Be very cautious. Be aware of the reputation of any school you look at within your field.

These courses are for my wife. We just had a daughter so she will have to stay home for a couple of months, she would like to make the most of her time and take some courses online. We are looking for the best place to take courses online that will be accepted by any college or university in the future. Thanks in advance.

The ONLY online degrees that are valued in academia in the US are those offered through REGIONALLY accredited schools.

U of Phoenix (and Capella, and AIU, and all those places that advertise all over the web) are not regionally accredited. They are "distance learning accredited," or "nationally accredited," which means nothing in academic circles. They are for-profit business that make their money from companies that pay for their employees to take courses. Because these companies pay for the courses, they are usually accepted within each company, but not elsewhere.

Degrees from state-university administered distance education courses are much less expensive than those offered by those fly-by-night diploma mills, and the course credits are universally accepted, and *transferable* from university to university. (Diploma mill course credits are not.)

There are tons of online programs. I personally attended American Intercontinental Univ. and Capella University, and teach for the University of Phoenix. All three are regionally accredited and solid programs. Online courses tend to vary in price, so we could say they are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am nearly finished my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

Suggestions for selecting online schools
The key is to make sure the college/university is accredited. I have three basic recommendations for everyone looking into online/distance education. They all have to do with exploring; after all, you have to defend your assets.

1. Make certain that you have triple checked their accreditation. First, they tell you what it is, then you go to that accrediting body’s website (not through the link provided by the school), and thirdly you would visit the department of education to see what they have to say. Do your diligent research into the institutions once you have narrowed down to a couple. You can look at the Better Business Bureau for more information on the college.

2. You must have extreme self motivation and be able to teach yourself per say. This means that you will not have someone telling you verbally, so it is up to you to get the information from the course room, text, and other resources. The best way to look at it is like a guided independent study course.

3. Review your goals, personal and professional. Make sure that the school that you are going to offers the programs that match your goals. Do not settle. There are many programs that are similar, but you have to make the ultimate decision. Do not let it be based on finances and length of program, but the fact that when you are finished or near finished you will be able to assume your proper place in the career field sought.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

Ask your classmates. The people I met in class were my best resource for getting jobs and salary information. Years later I am still using my contacts.

I am currently working fulltime and have a side hobby/business. It looks like I may be losing my fulltime position and I only have a high school education.

I would like to go to an accredited online school for business classes, but want something easy. I was an A-B student, but don’t have the same kind of time to devote to studies anymore.

I know of no SACS schools that offer a degree in Sociology online. The North Central Association of Schools and Colleges[(Higher Learning Commission)this is the regional equivalent of SACS has this programme] http://coned.colostate-pueblo.edu/ExternalDegree/Index.asp

That isn't too expensive, within the normal price range to go to a public university and with a normal number of required credit hours, and were you don't need to see the instructors face to face that much if at all. My mother has a lot of health problems and has attended Purdue University's Special Eduaction PhD program, but since then her health has declined so much that she's lucky to leave the house to go food shopping much less go to school so many days a week under a lot of stress.

DO NOT attempt to get a PhD online…PhD's are about research and interaction with your professors. The latter is essentially impossible online and any degree you would get is of far less value than one from a brick and mortar institution. Furthermore, money shouldn't be an issue because most PhD programs give their students funding. I realize your mother has health problems, but if she can't do a PhD the right way then maybe she shouldn't do it all
