Is a management/business studies degree reputable?

Tuesday Dec 30, 2008

Im applying for university at the moment and Im worried that management or business degrees arent well looked upon. I achieved 3 As for AS level in geography, spanish and economics, I really dont want to sell myself short and end up in a ditch with a rubbish degree and no prospects!! What do u think? Is it a useful degree?

well whether its useful or respectable are two separate questions.

i think that it can be extremely useful. prob make you some good money too. as for its prestige, i have never respected a business major. i think its a stupid subject and its easy. so those are two separate issues.

my major is opposite. it has high prestige. because everyone knows philosophy is hard. it requires difficult readings, concepts, and lots of clear and rigorous argumentation using formal logic

is it useful to sit around an contemplate the nature of reality and of morals? ….. i'll see you at Starbucks! do you want whipped cream on top?

PoliticallyCorrect:

Employers don't like management or business studies at undergrad. They like to see a 'real' subject followed by an MBA.

They like the added dimension of another specialist area and, in any case, the only way to study management is via case studies which is not really done at undergrad.

I would go with Geography or Spanish if you want to stay with one of the subject you have already chosen as it will be hard to study Economics without Maths.

Or go for something that is not an A'level subject!

derdaktari:

stick with the undergrad in Geography, then go for either the MBA (you will need to take a few pre-req bus courses though) OR an MPA (Master of Public Administration, OR go for the MURP (master in urban and regional planning)

the BBA->MBA track is overcrowded and is no longer going to cut it: employers want educated people, not clones of a system that produced the people who destroyed our financial markets just recently.

DO what you want to do. A degree is a degree and you are hardly going to have no prospects with a degree.

‘well looked upon’ by whom?

Some of the most academic courses don’t lead to employment.

If you want guaranteed employment become a teacher, doctor, plumber, nurse or a mechanic.
